In Brief

Mexico – On 15 August, security forces found 11 people dead from violence in the tourist city of Acapulco, and the bodies of six of them were discovered in clandestine graves near the Diamond Zone. The clandestine graves were located in Costa Dorada Boulevard, in a real estate development called Joyas del Marques.

Namibia – The Ministry of Environment and Tourism is concerned over the growing frequency of attacks on tourists visiting Namibia. At least two attacks on tourists have occurred in the last two weeks, with the most recent attack reported on the Western Bypass in Windhoek last week. A family of four German tourists survived an attempted hijacking and robbery on the Western Bypass on 10 August.

Nigeria – On 15 August, a Boko Haram female suicide bomber blew herself up and killed 27 others at a market in Maiduguri. Two more suicide bombers detonated their devices at the gates to a nearby refugee camp, wounding many people. The army says it has deployed 2,000 special forces troops to fight Boko Haram.

Peru – On 11 August, Peru said it was expelling Venezuela’s ambassador to Peru to protest the country’s recent creation of a constituent assembly. Venezuela responded by ordering the charge d’affaires at the Peruvian embassy in Caracas to leave the country within five days. Peru withdrew its ambassador to Venezuela in March.
